CEES BRAAKMAN (1917-1995)
Sideboard
Circa 1960, for Pastoe, Utrecht
Wenge, lacquered wood and chrome-plated metal, two doors opening to an adjustable shelf
Stamped "Pastoe"
Height: 70 cm.; Length: 102 cm.; Depth: 46 cm.
Rare sideboard by Dutch designer Cees Braakman, made around 1960 for the Pastoe manufacturer in Utrecht. This piece embodies the best of post-war modernist design: a wenge structure with warm tones, two white lacquered wood doors, and chrome-plated metal handles.
Braakman, artistic director of Pastoe from 1948 to 1978, was inspired by the research of Charles & Ray Eames to develop his own formal language: clean lines, noble materials, and a keen sense of proportion. His creations are now featured in the permanent collections of international museums, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
