Marco Zanuso (1916-2001) was one of the pioneers of Italian industrial design. An architect trained at the Politecnico di Milano, he quickly became involved in research into new materials and production methods after the Second World War.
The Lady armchair is one of his first major works for Arflex, a brand with which he collaborated from the start to experiment with modern padding, foams, elastic straps, etc. Presented at the 9th Milan Triennale in 1951 , it won the gold medal , marking its instant success.
The Lady model is often cited as emblematic of the period when design would move from an artisanal aesthetic to a more industrial production, with particular attention to comfort, modularity and ergonomics.
